Overview
Pine forests are the dominant upland habitat in southern Florida. However, because pineland habitat
takes up a small area relative to the larger wetland landscape, they are often overlooked. Ecostudies
Institute is working with the National Park Service in Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National
Preserve on a long-term monitoring program for pineland breeding birds. Data from this program are
used to monitor and detect changes in species abundance over time that might result from natural
processes (hurricanes, hydrology) and management practices (fire). In addition, relationships between
bird abundance and distribution with fire and hydrological restoration efforts are being investigated.
