John Lloyd has been involved in research on birds since his days as an undergraduate at the University
of Vermont. John received his Ph.D. in wildlife biology from the University of Montana in 2003, where he
worked with Dr. Tom Martin on a study of the ecology, behavior, and conservation biology of Chestnut-
collared Longspurs (see more in Grassland Bird Conservation). Dr. Lloyd’s study of Chestnut-collared
Longspurs was highlighted in an article in Birding, the journal of the American Birding Association. More
recently, Dr. Lloyd has worked on finding scientific solutions to the problems that roads pose for
wildlife. Other current projects, highlighted on our project pages, include studies of the effects of fire on
birds in south Florida pine forests; taxonomy and population size of the Grand Bahama race of the
Brown-headed Nuthatch, an island endemic; and habitat requirements and population abundance of
birds in Florida mangrove forests. In all facets of his work, Dr. Lloyd is especially interested in using
ecological theory to understand and solve conservation problems.
Dr. Lloyd has published numerous articles in leading scientific journals such as the Journal of Wildlife
Management, Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, and Behavioral Ecology. John frequently
gives presentations at scientific meetings, and as an invited speaker has discussed topics ranging from
the statistical analysis of nest survival data to methods for reducing collisions between animals and
motor vehicles. In addition to his research collaborations with land managers and scientists in academia,
NGOs, and federal and state agencies, Dr. Lloyd has also served as a consultant to the Oregon
Department of Transportation and the USDA Forest Service, helping them develop strategies for making
highways less dangerous for wildlife.
