Ellsworth Creek: an experiment in adaptive forest management

A nonprofit organization committed to ecological research and conservation

Ellsworth Creek is one of our newest projects, and one of our most exciting.
The Nature Conservancy is conducting a large-scale experiment in forest
management at their Ellsworth Creek Preserve in southwestern Washington, with
the hope of learning how to accelerate the development of old-growth forest
conditions in younger forests. The response of bird populations is one measure
that The Nature Conservancy will use to evaluate the efficacy of different
forest-management practices. Ecostudies Institute has just begun collecting
pre-treatment data on bird populations; these data will serve as the baseline
from which the effect of the different treatments will be evaluated.
Check back later this summer for more information on the results of our first
field season. In the meantime, you can read more about the adaptive forest
management at Ellsworth Creek here. Please contact us if you have any
questions!
